For a knocked-out tooth, handle it by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it, and try to place it back in the socket or keep it in milk until you reach us. For a broken tooth or a lost crown or filling, save any pieces and avoid chewing on that side. For pain or swelling, a cold compress and over-the-counter pain relief can help while you wait.

For a life-threatening injury, severe facial swelling or trouble breathing, call 911 or go directly to the nearest hospital emergency room.
